Referencing, Citing, and Structuring Bibliographies

A beginners' guide to referencing and bibliographies.

Referencing tools

Royal Holloway subscribes to two reference management tools, RefWorks and EndNote. You can find details on how to access and install these using the links on the left hand side.

Mendeley and Zotero are also freely available but are not subscribed to by Royal Holloway

How can I access my references after I've finished my course or College employment?

When you finish your course, access to all electronic library resources, including RefWorks, will end due to licence agreements with suppliers. If you wish to keep your references choose from one of the options below. Make sure you do this before the end of your course.

  • You can create an alumni RefWorks account for free. To do this you will need to log in to your account, click your name at the top right hand side of the screen, and change your role to 'Alumni'
  • Export your references from Refworks as either a BibTex or RIS file and import them into a free reference management service on the Internet which may have more limited functionality. See the box to the left for options.
  • EndNote users, you can export your references in RIS or txt format along with a copy of your EndNote Library file to use at your next employment.
  • Purchase a personal copy of EndNote while still a student, at the heavily discounted student rate. For details and to purchase visit EndNote's student page.
