Referencing, Citing, and Structuring Bibliographies

A beginners' guide to referencing and bibliographies.

Zotero and LaTeX

Zotero allows you to export a BibTEX that you can use with LaTEX. There are two options. The first is simpler and suitable if you don't need to make changes to the BibTEX file once generated. The second will allow you to auto-sync the BibTEX file.

Simple method

  1. Create your Zotero reference list.
  2. Select your required references by using Ctrl or Command and A.
  3. Click the File tab, then Export Library.
  4. Change the format to BibTEX by clicking the drop down File options.
  5.  Ensure Export Notes is ticked then click OK.
  6. The file will automatically add a .bib extension; change the file name as required then save the file into the same folder as your LaTEdocument.

Extension method

The benefits of this method include being able to keep your .bib file automatically updated as new references are added to the Zotero manager. In the simple method, you would need to redownload the .bib file each time you need to add a new reference. This method also allows you to generate your own citekey.

  1. Install and enable the Better BibTEX plugin.
  2. Open Zotero.
  3. Click the Tools tab and select Plugins.
  4. Click on the gear in the top-right corner and choose Install Plugin From File….
  5. Choose the .xpi file that you’ve just downloaded and select Install.
  6. If it does not already prompt you to do so, restart Zotero.
  7. To create the BibTEX file, click the File tab, then Export Library.
  8. Change the format to Better BibTEX or Better BibLaTEX by clicking the drop down File options.
  9. Tick the options Keep Updated and Export Notes save as a .bib file in the same folder as your LaTEdocument.
