Library Information and Digital Skills Framework: Transition

The transition between levels of study—further education to higher education, through undergraduate courses, and into postgraduate education—requires learners to develop new skills to be successful. Supporting learners through these stages can contribute to their long-term success and well-being and build independent learning skills. This can start even before students join Royal Holloway and continue into their future.

Learners will be able to:

  • Self-assess their digital and information literacy skills
  • Identify opportunities for personal development
  • Access appropriate help and support
  • Take ownership of their learning
  • Utilise library resources effectively to support their learning
  • Independently apply digital and information literacy skills in assignments, research and the workplace

Session examples:

Learners receive an induction to library services so they can understand how it supports their learning at different levels of study.

Learners self-assess their current digital and information literacy skills, recognise gaps, and identify development opportunities.

Learners explore the services that the library offers related to wellbeing, inclusivity and accessibility.

Examples of School-specific transition skills teaching

  • Postgraduate Taught: Bitesize session to diagnose the existing research skills of the students, whether they are former Royal Holloway students, students at another UK institution, international students or already working on the industry. Signposting appropriate asynchronous resources to support their research.
  • Postgraduate Researchers: Introduction to the Library and highlighting other avenues for research (use of Archives, Senate House, British Library, SCONUL Access Scheme).

Examples of general transition support provided

  • Undergraduate First Year and PGT: General inductions.
  • Undergraduate Second, Third and Fourth Year: Welcome Back inductions
  • Pre-Arrival Stuents: Get Set Day
