In an information rich society, it is imperative that learners can identify reliable GGraphic illustrating the 6 main areas we teach. All text in graphic is outlined in the main webpage.and trustworthy sources. Being able to navigate fake news, misinformation and disinformation, and identify high quality research has application in assignments, research projects, and the workplace. Critical evaluation skills are highly valued across many industries and sectors.

Learners will be able to:

  • Identify the traits of fake news, misinformation and disinformation
  • Apply criteria to assess the reliability of resources
  • Understand how bias affects the credibility of resources
  • Select trustworthy resources for their information need
  • Use evidence to inform conclusions
  • Evaluate the reliability of AI tools and their outputs

Session examples:

Learners apply criteria to assess the reliability of resources and select appropriate ones to use in an assignment or research project.

Learners evaluate the outputs of AI Tools and create strategies to appropriately incorporate AI tools into their research practice.

Evaluating skills in Business and Management

  • Foundation year and year 1: Introduction to a set of principles to evaluate the reliability of information from a variety of sources.
  • Year 2: Interactive session on evaluating the reliability of different sources of information within and without library resources, and assessing their suitability for academic work.
  • Postgraduate taught project: Interactive session on evaluating the output of generative AI tools and the suitability of different sources as references for an academic project.

Evaluating skills in Humanities

  • Undergraduate Year 2: AI and reliability - Apply critical evaluation techniques to assess the reliability of Generative AI outputs and make an informed decision on its suitability for use in an assignment.

Evaluating skills in Life Science and Environment

  • Undergraduate Year 1 (GG1011) How to quickly evaluate information sources for use in an assignment, using preset criteria
  • Postgraduate Taught (MSc Food Science) How to evaluate sources and place them in context; self examination of biases and how that relates to trust of a source, including AI sources

Discovering skills in PDA
