Library Information and Digital Skills Framework: Referencing

Referencing is not just about being able to follow a referencing guide or use a reference management tool. It is also about understanding the ethical and appropriate use of data and information in assignments, research, and the workplace. Understanding plagiarism, academic integrity, and how to properly credit authors/creators is integral to our learners’ success.  

 Learners will be able to: 

  • Describe examples of plagiarism 
  • Describe the principles and purpose of referencing 
  • Accurately apply a referencing style 
  • Use an appropriate reference management tool 

Session examples: 

Learners follow a specific reference style to accurately reference common resources in their subject area.  

Learners use an appropriate reference management tool to manage and organise their research and generate references in a specific referencing style.  

Referencing skills in Business and Management

  • Undergraduate Year 3 (MN3311): Understanding what plagiarism is and how to reference in Harvard including the use of RefWorks.

Referencing skills in EPMS

  • Undergraduate year 1: Introduction to the basics of referencing in IEEE or Harvard, when we should reference, how to reference accurately, and simple tools to help format references.
  • Undergraduate year 2: Learning to referencing in IEEE style and analysing posters to identify examples of accurate and inaccurate references.
  • Final Year Projects and Postgraduate Taught Projects: Introduction to referencing management tools to save, manage and format references automatically, with plugins for Word and LaTeX.

Referencing skills in Humanities

  • Undergraduate Year 1: Referencing - how to reference common resources using MHRA, MLA or Harvard style.
  • Undergraduate dissertations and PGT: how to use reference management tools to store references and create bibliographies.

Referencing skills in Law and Social Sciences

  • Undergraduate Year 1: An Introduction to Harvard Referencing - Understand the principles of referencing, how to avoid plagiarism, and how to apply the Harvard Cite Them Right referencing style in an assignment.
  • Undergraduate Year 2: Advanced OSCOLA Referencing - Building on previous knowledge, explore advanced OSCOLA referencing techniques such as subsequent citations, references for International sources, and referencing specific resource types not previously covered.
  • Undergraduate Year 3 and PGT: Reference Management Tools - How to use a reference management tools like RefWorks and EndNote to manage research and generate references and a bibliography in your chosen referencing style.

Referencing skills in Life Science and Environment

  • Undergraduate Year 1: (PS1070) Overview of APA 7 referencing style, how to apply it successfully, and secondary referencing for a specific assignment
  • Undergraduate Year 2: (BS2000) Referencing tools and how to choose one that's right for you
  • Postgraduate Taught students: Harvard referencing from start to finish - the basic principles of the style and how they can be applied to any resource

Referencing skills in PDA

  • Undergraduate Year 1: Essential Library Skills. Understanding your department’s referencing style, understanding the importance of accurate referencing and where to get further guidance.
  • All Undergraduate Years and PGTs: Reference Management Software: How to use tools to manage your research and generate references and bibliographies.
  • All Undergraduate Years and PGTs: Advanced Referencing: Building on initial skills learnt this session would focus on more advanced searching concepts and focusing on how to reference a range of resources e.g. multimedia, images and non standard resources.
