Library Services has created some interactive training resources and quizzes to help you develop your critical evaluation skills. Find out more using the links below.
The Evaluating section on Moodle (login required) will help you develop the skills you need to critically evaluate information so you're able to select reliable and appropriate information for your research and assignments.
These skills are useful for helping identify fake news and misinformation, poor quality research and unreliable information.
Content is interactive and includes: podcasts on misinformation and filter bubbles, understanding and applying a framework for critical evaluation, and how to select the most suitable type of resources for different situations.
Digital skills: succeeding in a digital world
Digital skills: succeeding in a digital world is a free course from the Open University. The course lasts about 8 weeks, with approximately 3 hours' study time each week. You can work through the course at your own pace, so if you have more time one week there is no problem with pushing on to complete another week's study. You can also take as long as you want to complete it. Follow this link for more information and to register.
In this Moodle section (login required) you will find a framework that you can use to help you critically evaluate information and an activity for you to practice your critical evaluation skills.
You will need to use these skills to ensure you select reliable and appropriate resources for use in your assignments and research.
The framework is called the CRAB Framework. It provides a series of prompts or questions to help you think about how reliable and useful a piece of information is. It uses four broad points:
C - Currency
R - Relevance
A - Authority
B - Bias
The framework is not a rigid guide, not all of the prompts will be applicable for every piece of information. Use the framework as a quick guide to make sure you have considered the varies aspects of a resource when judging its reliability and usefulness. Login to the training to find out more.
