You MUST reference every idea, opinion, fact or quote from a source, even if you put it in your own words.
We ALWAYS recommend that you check referencing advice given by your department and tutor as some referencing conventions may vary.
For further help and support please visit the referencing section on the Library's Moodle page. The Library Moodle page is available to you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and is full of guidance and activities on referencing, plagiarism, and other research skills you will need whilst studying at Royal Holloway.
This department recommend using a version of Harvard style which uses an author-date citation in the text and a full list of references, entitled Reference list or References at the end of your work.
You can find guidance on this style in your departmental handbook or by using the book Cite Them Right by Richard Pears.
Reference management tools help you to save and organise your research, they can also help you to format references and citations and also create bibliographies.
The library provides access to RefWorks for all students to use, there are also a number of free tools available online.
To find out more about these tools and how to use them visit this guide to Referencing Tools.
