You MUST reference every idea, opinion, fact or quote from a source, even if you put it in your own words.
We ALWAYS recommend that you check referencing advice given by your department and tutor as some referencing conventions may vary.
For further help and support please visit the referencing section on the Library's Moodle page. The Library Moodle page is available to you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and is full of guidance and activities on referencing, plagiarism, and other research skills you will need whilst studying at Royal Holloway.
The department uses the Harvard referencing style. You can find guidance in Cite Them Right Online and in the latest version of 'Cite them right: The essential referencing guide' by Richard Pears and Graham Shields. If you are accessing Cite Them Right Online off campus you need to use the Campus Anywhere VPN. You can also find an introduction to Harvard referencing in our Harvard referencing resource.
You can find guidance on how to use RefWorks, an online reference management tool, on our Moodle page.
If you are doing a joint programme of study, such as CrimSoc with Law or Psychology you maybe be required to use a different referencing style in some assignments. Please check with the module convener or your personal tutor.
Reference management tools help you to save and organise your research, they can also help you to format references and citations and also create bibliographies.
The library provides access to RefWorks for all students to use, there are also a number of free tools available online.
To find out more about these tools and how to use them visit this guide to Referencing Tools.
