Accessing theses

Royal Holloway theses

Many of our doctoral theses are available online and can be found through LibrarySearch, and we recommend searching there first. You can also find our doctoral theses on the College repository, where you can use the advanced filter to search for “doctoral thesis”. Some are also available through the ProQuest Dissertations and Theses database, which you can access through the E-resources A-Z.

Please note that some theses are under embargo, and cannot be consulted until this expires.

A number of our theses (mostly produced between 1990 and 2010) are only available in print and you will need to request them via LibrarySearch. They can only be consulted in the Library in the Davison Building. Requests may take up to 10 working days to process.

Instructions for current College PGR students:

Royal Holloway's Academic Board approved an E-thesis Submission Policy in June 2010, and updated it in 2016. From 1st October 2016, students are no longer required to submit a print copy of their finalised thesis to the College. Students are required to submit an electronic copy of their finalised thesis to Pure.

For instructions on how to submit e-theses via Pure, please consult the Pure pages

Theses from other UK institutions

Royal Holloway staff and students have access to the Index to Theses through our membership of Senate House (you will need to register with Senate House if you have not already done so). Index to Theses can be accessed via the E-resources A-Z.

Most British PhD are available via the British Library's electronic theses service EThOS (Electronic Theses Online System). For more details about EThOS, please see their FAQ page.

Some UK theses are available in the British Library’s St Pancras Reading rooms. To view a thesis there you will need a British Library reader’s pass and you will also need to check with British Library, before you travel, that it is available for you to consult. A few institutions, including Oxford and Cambridge Universities, will not lend theses at all - in these instances there is no alternative to visiting the library of the awarding institution.

*Please note that due to current circumstances some institutions will not be able to offer their services to external users.

Theses from other countries

Virtually all American and some other foreign theses are indexed in the ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Global database, which you can access through the E-resources A-Z. This resource also provides full-text access to a substantial number of theses.

Some Canadian theses and dissertations are available online for free download at the Theses Canadaportal. This service also provides details of all Canadian authored theses, including theses submitted to U.S. universities.

European theses can be searched for using DART - Europe E-theses portal. It does not contain everything, but has a substantial and steadily growing list of contributors.
