Information Literacy

This part of the guide details what all Royal Holloway students' should experience throughout their degree. We look at how we, the Library Information Consultants, can aid students' learning and information skills development.

Undergraduate Experience of Information Skills

The ideal undergraduate experience is that the library information skills sessions are seen as integral to the degree programme and are embedded into courses and/or seminars. Attendance would be compulsory and preferably the information skills are assessed through a marked assignment. We often find that our information skills teaching has better impact and has greater value for students when they can apply what is taught to an assignment or assessment.

It is crucial that information skills are recognised as integral to a student's learning and provides a strong skill set beyond academic study. To ensure that students gain the necessary information skills, it is important to have academic endorsement and that our teaching forms part of their course/degree programme.

Postgraduate Taught Experience of Information Skills

The ideal postgraduate taught student experience is similar to that of the undergraduate in that the library information skills sessions work best when they are seen by both the academic department and the student as integral to the degree programme. Information skills sessions ideally are embedded into courses and/or seminars. Attendance is compulsory and preferably the information skills are assessed through a marked assignment.
